Seniors and Parents of Seniors! Senior Submission Yearbook deadline is fast approaching (November 2nd). It is extremely important that you check your HHS email. Yearbook has sent out individual notices with directions and access to your Upload Folder. We've also sent out a separate Survey to gather information so we can plan the yearbook layout. Less than 20% of seniors have responded.

COMMUNITY SERVICE The library wants to give you community hours as you read! Yes, you are hearing that correctly. We want to promote reading! How do you do that? 1. Check a book out 2. Read the book 3. Record the time it took you to read the book 4. Write a brief summary of the book 5. Send the summary to Mrs. Schwartz. Mrs. Schwartz will then make it Book of the Week for the school! You will receive Community Service hours for both the time it took you to read the book and for the time it took you to write the summary! This means you can get Community Service hours for reading and telling others about the book! The Library is open 7:30 to 2:15. See Mrs. Schwartz or Mrs. Gove in the library for more information.

Students interested in after-school Theatre activities during this school year are encouraged to introduce themselves to Ms. Toole in person or by email. Hermon High School typically produces 3 shows a year in addition to a variety of activities such as field trips and conferences. Although the program will look different this year, we are still inviting new students to join us and learn about what we do. You do not have to be experienced in Theatre--people join for a variety of reasons, including to improve their presenting and public speaking skills, gain confidence, and make new friends. Contact Ms. Toole today for additional information.

Distance Learning in Chemistry. Who knew chemistry would be so much fun when you get to bake cupcakes! Students in Mrs. Fusco's chemistry classes were given 3 different recipes to choose from to create their own "cupcake in a mug." The catch is that the recipes were written in terms of weight! So students had to practice their unit conversion skills to get to the correct English measuring units we are used to using. The results look great and tasty!! Great work!!

Dear Class of 2020, As you may know, our Governor's recent Stay-at-Home Order extends school closures to May 4th, 2020. With this guidance, we will need to postpone our May 2nd prom. We are sorry to bring you this news at such a challenging time for us all, but know that we are doing all that we can to make up for the lost time of your senior year and to bring you the special events you have been looking forward to. Above all else, we are in this together as a class, staff, and administration and will be stronger for it. We are working hard to reschedule our prom for a later date that will ensure the safety and health of all students and staff. Your well-being is our number one priority at this time. Please stay connected through email, the class of 2020 Google Classroom, and the class of 2020 Instagram page. We are here for you all during this difficult time. Ideally, the volunteer would have a large SUV or van as we are predicting an order of 200+ boxes of doughnuts. The date of delivery is flexible as we haven't started the fundraiser yet. Today we celebrated our school’s first-ever Day of Welcome. Our civil rights team and civil rights teams all across Maine celebrated and promoted the idea that our school communities are for everyone. This event was sponsored by the Maine Office of the Attorney General through the Civil Rights Team Project, who support us in our work of engaging the school community in thinking and talking about issues related to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation. The Civil Rights Team Project and civil rights teams are supported in this work by state law and our school policies. Our civil rights team used the Day of Welcome to make a powerful statement about the kind of school community we all want, while introducing ourselves and engaging our peers in understanding our ongoing work. Thank you to our wonderful staff and students who offered vocal and visible support of the event! Thank you also to Ntension in Bangor, ME for donating these promotional banners! The lasting impact of these banners is immeasurable and our team is beyond appreciative!

Maine DOE Seeks Students to Serve on First-ever Student Cabinet!! APPLICANTS SOUGHT The Maine Department of Education (DOE) today announced that it is launching its first-ever student cabinet, a group of students that will meet quarterly with Commissioner Pender Makin to discuss educational opportunities, improvements, and policy. The purpose of the Student Cabinet is to provide a forum for Maine students’ voices to be heard. Cabinet meetings will allow students from different grade levels, backgrounds, and areas of Maine to share their opinions and offer advice about Maine’s education system with Maine’s Commissioner of Education and other leaders from the Maine Department of Education. Students grades 4 – 12 and first year of college are invited to submit an application to be a member of the Student Cabinet. Members selected will serve for a term of 12 months starting on November 1, 2019. Cabinet meetings will be held throughout the school year. Most meetings are expected to be held as video conferences which will require cabinet members to have access to a computer or device with an internet connection. There will be at least one in-person meeting, for which the Maine DOE will reimburse travel costs. Student Cabinet members will be selected based on representation of Maine’s geography, with a goal of two students from each county in Maine, based on the pool of applications submitted, and inclusive of the diverse cultural and economic backgrounds of students throughout Maine. Selected students will be expected to attend scheduled meetings, prepare for each meeting as needed, work in a collaborative manner with each other and with Department staff as needed; and express views and opinions openly, constructively, and respectfully. By becoming a member on the Maine DOE Student Cabinet, students will benefit by: Having a direct role in improving education for students in Maine; Gain important leadership, public speaking, decision making, and team building skills; Develop a network of support and mentors through exposure to leaders across the state, and; Have a great addition to their resume and applications for secondary opportunities. Instructions for applying: Students interested in serving on the Maine DOE Student Cabinet will need to submit the electronic application, with consent from a parent or guardian, by Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 5 pm. Ms. Trenckmann's Ecology of Maine class had to opportunity to take things outside of the state of Maine and video chat into the Exploration Vessel Nautilus (currently exploring Johnston Atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean)! Students were given the opportunity to live chat with an education fellow onboard the vessel to learn more about the groundbreaking research currently taking place. This Exploration Vessel is equipped with some of the latest technological systems and is focused on advancing the frontiers of ocean explorations. Students we able to learn about the ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) onboard the vessel, and how scientists are both mapping the seafloor and collecting samples of organisms from the deep depths of the ocean. If you are interested in seeing what the ROVs are capturing, visit the Nautilus Live website to see a livestream from the vessel! https://nautiluslive.org/
